ED ELSLAGER SEEDLING COMPETITION

Plants may be checked in before the meeting starts.  Please enter only plants of distinction.

   1.      Exhibitors must be a member of the American Hosta Society or the Michigan Hosta Society.

2.      Exhibitors must indicate on the Convention Registration Form the total number of plants they will be entering (the limit is 12 total plants with a maximum of three in any one Class)

3.      Plants may be entered in someone else’s name. If this is done, any prizes won will be      awarded to the originator.  The person(s) entering the plant will be considered their representative.   

4.      A maximum of    200 plants will be exhibited and judged.  Management has the right to further reduce the limit of entries per exhibitor if entries exceed   200 plants.

5.      A minimum of two divisions, all of an identical type shall be entered.  Bloom scapes may be removed or left intact at the discretion of the exhibitor.

6.      Only unregistered, unnamed seedlings are eligible.

7.      All plants will be exhibited in a plain black plastic pot, pot size to be determined by the exhibitor. Any foreign substances on plant will result in disqualification.  Only potting soil is allowed in pot.  No taping, staking or other means of support or repair is allowed.

8.      All plants must have been grown from seed by the exhibitor and be established in their containers.

9.      Plants appearing to exhibit nematodes, viruses or other diseases or pests will not be allowed in the exhibition room.  Decisions on this will be made by the hosta show chair or the person designated by the show chair.

10.  All top placing plants must remain in the exhibition area until clean up Saturday.

11.  An attendant will be in exhibition area during viewing times but convention assumes no responsibility for exhibits.

Class 1                          Green (all shades)
Class 2 Blue (all shades)
Class 3 Yellow (all shades)
Class 4 Variegated with lighter margin (all shades)
Class 5 Variegated with lighter center (all shades)
Class 6 Splashed or irregular variegation

POINT SCORING FOR THIS DIVISION  
Distinction 60 points
Color and Pattern 10 points
Form 10 points
Substance 10 points
Condition and Grooming 5 points
Clump size (includes number of divisions) 5 points
TOTAL 100 points

Since each plant in this division is a unique entry, the judges are to evaluate each plant on the above point system.  Please note the number of points for distinction.

Blue, Red, White and Yellow ribbons will be awarded to plants that merit award.

JUDGING TEAM   (four members)

Shall consist of the following four category members  (all non competing individuals )

  1. A known hybridizer of hosta

  2. A nurseryman/grower

  3. A knowledgeable hosta expert

  4. A hosta grower with 100+ hostas under cultivation
